For more than fifteen years Mike Johnston has been the producer and host of “Destination Out,” heard each Sunday from 11:00 p.m. – 1:00 a.m. “Destination Out” features a wide selection of world music and creative jazz. “It’s a fact that music is a universal language, and our world is filled with many diverse kinds of great music,” says Mike. “I’m happy to have an opportunity to expose some of that musical diversity on CMU Public Radio.”

Mike has a wide range of artistic interests. He has a Masters of Fine Arts in Photography from Central Michigan University and was a writer for the jazz magazine Coda Publications for several years. He is a founding member of the creative jazz ensemble The Northwood Improvisers and currently plays with Detroit jazz musician Faruq Z. Bey.

In addition to his radio show at CMU Public Radio, Mike is the manager of New Moon Records in Mt. Pleasant. He also teaches courses in jazz history, rock and roll history, world music, music appreciation and photography at both Delta College and Mid-Michigan Community College.

Mike was raised in Traverse City and currently lives in Mt. Pleasant with his wife. When he’s not immersed in music he finds time to enjoy sports!
