The best thing about waking up for more than 13 million people worldwide? Coffee, juice, and a staple to satisfy the curious: Morning Edition with Renee Montagne and Steve Inskeep. Hours before alarms buzz and coffeemakers drip, an international team of award-winning journalists, commentators, producers, and analysts prepare the most popular news program on public radio, offering a welcome alternative to the talking heads, sound-bite journalism, and confrontational conversation found elsewhere.

As a source of news and information, Morning Edition goes deeper. National hosts Renee Montagne and Steve Inskeep and a cast of NPR reporters and contributors present multi-faceted stories and commentary meant to inform, challenge, and occasionally even amuse. Listeners get a play-by-play on national politics from Cokie Roberts, wonder at the wisdom of animals with cowboy-poet Baxter Black, ponder the philosophy of sports with Frank Deford, meet fascinating people with Susan Stamberg, and take exotic adventures with Alex Chadwick and Radio Expeditions.

Now in its third decade on the air, Morning Edition with Renee Montagne and Steve Inskeep is more than a morning news program. It is essential radio that frames the day for devoted listeners around the world.

David Nicholas has been news director for CMU Public Radio since May of 2001. Our resident early-bird, David hosts “Morning Edition” each weekday between 6 and 9 a.m. He and his small staff of student reporters also produce the many local and regional news and feature stories you hear during “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered.”

David’s tireless efforts in the newsroom resulted in WCMU FM being named 2003 “Public Broadcasting Station of the Year.” He has earned a number of awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, including several honors for broadcast excellence. David also produces and hosts “Capitol Report” for CMU Public Television. The half hour program airs Tuesdays at 7:30 PM between January and May.

David began his career with CMU Public Radio as music director and host of “Nightside” for 11 years (1990-2001). During that time he also served as emcee of the Flint Jazz Festival.
Before joining WCMU, David worked as a board operator for WFBE in Flint from 1983-1985, weekend announcer for WDEY in Lapeer in 1988 and Evening Classical Announcer at WITF in Harrisburg, PA from 1988-1990.

David received a degree in Broadcast and Cinematic Arts from Central Michigan University with a minor in Music History in 1987. He lives in Mt. Pleasant with his wife Kelli and their dog Scruffy.
