Join CMU Public Radio (Harbor Springs, 103.9 FM and Alpena, 91.7 FM) for another installment of our ongoing locally-produced series, "On the Map," beginning Monday, October 1, at 8:35 a.m. during "Morning Edition," with a repeat broadcast each day at 5:45 p.m. during "All Things Considered."
In this edition of "On The Map," we stop in Cheboygan. Join CMU Public Radio's Amy Robinson as she visits this community.
During part one on Monday, October 1, we’ll introduce you to one of the community’s most notable buildings, the Cheboygan Opera House. Built in 1877, this historic landmark has survived both fire and time, and today, is considered the cultural center of the city.
Part two of this installment airs Tuesday, October 2, and focuses on the unique, prehistoric and exceptionally-large Lake Sturgeon. The fish is endemic to the Great Lakes basin and was almost wiped out from over-fishing. Lake Sturgeon have found a home in the Cheboygan area. We’ll visit the hatchery built to ensure their future.
We’ll conclude this installment on “On the Map” on Wednesday, October 3 with a conversation with a local man who discovered a comet. Patrick Stonehouse is a long-time comet-hunter who, after 30 years of searching the skies, has finally found what he was looking for: a previously undiscovered comet that now bears his name.
