| Training Students in Station Promotions: | ||||||||||||
| Under the supervision of the Communications Coordinator, CMU students learn many aspects of public relations, including preparing press releases, drafting copy, and assisting with other promotion efforts. | ||||||||||||
| These students many times are majoring in public relations and use their experience at CMU Public Radio to enhance their coursework. | ||||||||||||
| Training Students in Live Sports Broadcasts: | ||||||||||||
| Through a partnership between CMU Public Television and the Broadcast & Cinematic Arts department at Central Michigan University, the station airs several live CMU men's and women's basketball games. | ||||||||||||
| Students gain valuable experience and knowledge about various broadcast related jobs. The students get the opportunity to broadcast, edit and produce the live program. | ||||||||||||
| Career Opportunities Presentations: | ||||||||||||
| 11/4/06 Participated in the NBS Region 2 Convention "CAREER FOCUS". The session was one on one conversations with students regarding their potential for a career in Broadcasting. | ||||||||||||
| Suggestions were given on continued education, resume support and employment possibilities. There were approximately 50 students from the Midwest attending the Conference. | ||||||||||||
| Internal Training Program to Enable Personnel to Acquire Skills for Higher-Level Positions: | ||||||||||||
| Have in place a basic hiring structure to allow for the hiring of entry-level personnel and establish a graduated system whereby station employees could attain promotions based on pre-determined, quantifiable | ||||||||||||
| criteria. Two separate tracts were established for Directors and Producers. The levels were set at Level I, II, and III with requirements set for moving within those levels. We currently have two employees | ||||||||||||
| in this new system who have successfully achieved our expectations and have been promoted to the next level. | ||||||||||||
| Outreach Activities: | ||||||||||||
| 10/17/06 Gave tour of station to group of CMU students in "Intro to Journalism & Mass Media" class. Tour covered TV operational areas, plus TV studio, explaining program production with mention of diversity | ||||||||||||
| of jobs needed to create TV shows. Also included description of digital TV transmission, transition to digital TV system, explanation of cameras in studio, description of jov of TV Producer/Director, | ||||||||||||
| TV Master Control Operator and TV traffice functions. Ended with explanation of new production truck with its satellite and microwave capabilities. | ||||||||||||
| 11/06 Rick Schudiske (Assistant General Manager) participated in the judging of video entries for the "National Broadcasting Society" Production and Scriptwriting Competition. | ||||||||||||
| 11/20/06 Three Boy Scouts and their Scout Leader visited the station to observe the live production of "Ask the C.P.A.s". They were shown the TV Control Room and were given an explanation of our coverage area, | ||||||||||||
| the switcher, color monitors and 1" video tape machines, including a look at a 1-inch tape from its box.They were also given an explanation of the "green screen" waveform monitors. | ||||||||||||
| They also observed some of the studio preparations for the show. The boys were shown to the production Bus where they observed the creation of a live half-hour show. | ||||||||||||
| They were able to observe the director telling the camera people how to frame their shots, as well as hear him give directions to the audio operator and camera engineer. | ||||||||||||
| Their observation was in support of their efforts to obtain their "Cinematography" merit badge. | ||||||||||||
