Carl R. Sams II and his wife Jean Stoick are nationally known for their wildlife photographs. They are also recognized for their “In the Woods” children’s book series, showcasing their deer photography. These books have placed them on the New York Best Sellers list and have led them to create movies based on the books as well.

It’s a craft passed down from generation to generation. As a child, Glen Van Antwerp was taught by his grandfather how to carve fans and delicate birds out of northern white cedar. He has continued to carve them ever since, and is now teaching his grandson. In this vignette we take a look at how one piece of wood is skillfully transformed into art.

If you’ve traveled the high ways and back roads near the northern Michigan town of Onaway, you might have noticed large pieces of artwork that honor past presidents, war veterans, and Native Americans. Tom Moran, the owner of Moran Iron Works in Onaway, has mixed his love for art and his talent for creating iron masterpieces that make his creations the talk of the town.
