Many Michiganders now have another extension before their drivers' licenses expire.
Bills signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Thursday extend the expiration date of driver’s licenses, personal I.D.s and vehicle registrations until one hundred and twenty days after a previous deadline between March 31 and August 1 of this year.
Republican Sen. Curt VanderWall introduced the bills. He’s been critical of Michigan’s Democratic Secretary of State because of long wait times for transactions during the pandemic.
“If it’s not their fault for not being able to get their license by the time of their birthday. We should not as a state or Secretary of State be charging them a late fee,” VanderWall said.
Under the new laws, Michigan cannot charge late fees for renewing licenses until the secretary of state makes same-day, in-person service available to walk-in customers.
