The Army Corps of Engineers is hosting public meetings as part of its review process of Enbridge’s proposed Line 5 tunnel.
Public meetings are a required first step in the development of an Environmental Impact Statement or EIS. That document reviews the potential environmental effects of the proposed tunnel.
Emily Schaefer is a Public Affairs Specialist with the Army Corps. She said all comments are weighed equally.
“Comments received during scoping will help the Corps of Engineers to ensure that our EIS considers the issues the public is concerned about in relation to the Line 5 tunnel project,” Schaefer said.
The tunnel project cannot move forward without the EIS or approval from the Michigan Public Service Commission.
The public meetings will begin in September and can be found on the Army Corps EIS site. Comments can be submitted online until October 14th.
Once the comment period ends, the Army Corps will begin working on a draft EIS.
