Six candidates are running to be nominees for their respective political parties in primary elections on Aug. 4. U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman, R-Watersmeet, is currently occupying the seat, and has since 2017. He's running for re-election.

Bergman will be up against Justin Michal and Matthew DenOtter in the Republican primary.

On the Democratic ticket, Callie Barr is running for the second year in a row. She will be up against Wayne Stiles and Kyle Blomquist. Barr lost to Bergman in the Nov. 2024 general election by over 20 points.

Zebulon Featherly, a Houghton resident, is running as an Independent and will appear on the November ballot.

The First Congressional District consists of the entire Upper Peninsula and the majority of northern Michigan counties.

WCMU Public Media sent a survey on July 9 to all six candidates running in the primaries, asking for their views on different campaign issues. The candidates touched on affordability, housing, infrastructure and more in their answers. Each candidates responses are linked below in individual articles.

Methodology: The same survey was sent to all six candidates. Each response was thoroughly reviewed for grammar and accuracy. We also included links and/or editor's notes for additional information and clarity as needed.
