A 28-year-old man has been arrested for his alleged connection with a two-car crash that temporarily closed the Mackinac Bridge early Wednesday morning. Redane Smith was arraigned Thursday afternoon in Mackinac County.
Smith is a seasonal worker from Jamaica, according to the state police. He faces a felony reckless driving charge.
The Michigan State Police said just before 3 a.m. one car rear ended the other going southbound on the bridge. The Mighty Mac was shut down, but reopened just before 8 a.m.
MSP said in a statement that the cars passed through the tollbooth, accelerated and started "driving recklessly at high rates of speed.”
Michigan State Police Lt. Benjamin Eckola said four people were injured and received treatment at a local hospital.
“The initial reports were that two individuals were seriously injured and an additional two were injured with non-life-threatening injuries,” Eckola said.
MSP said in a statement that speed and alcohol are potential factors in the crash, and more charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
Smith is being held on a bond of $100,000, his next court date is October 5th.
A spokesperson for the Mackinac Bridge Authority declined to comment on this story.
