Watch the debates live at 7 p.m., thanks to our colleagues at 9&10 News:
Every two years, these events put candidates front-and-center in front of those they’re hoping to represent.
This year, hear from 103rd House District incumbent Rep. Betsy Coffia (D-Traverse City) and her challenger, Edwin Dean (R-Northport). They’ll be joined by state Sen. John Damoose (R-Harbor Springs) and his 37th District challenger Kate Gallup (D-Cedar).
Moderators for the event are Brian Freiberger, editor of the Leelanau Enterprise; Ed Ronco, news director at Interlochen Public Radio; and Jacob Wheeler, editor and publisher of the Glen Arbor Sun. The League of Women Voters of Leelanau County helps craft questions, too.
And yes, there will be cherry pie and ice cream! Admission is free, as is the dessert.
Doors open at 6:30, with the debate starting at 7 p.m., at Glen Arbor Town Hall, 6394 W. Western Ave, Glen Arbor, MI 49636
The Cherry Pie Debates were created in 2014 as a way to bring the community together and have a face-to-face discussion while incorporating Michigan’s cherry culture. Wheeler said that the event blends American and northern Michigan traditions in the best way.
“Nothing is as American as conversations previewing Democratic elections,” he said. “But nothing is as northern Michigan as cherry pie, right?”
