At a Black Voters for Benson event on Detroit's west side, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson talked about what she'd do for the Black community if elected.

Attendees told Benson that one of their biggest concerns going into the midterm elections is affordability. According to data from the 2020 census, the city of Saginaw's poverty rate sits at about 34%.

Candidates on both sides of the aisle have called for reforms of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the state agency who control subsidy spending.

“No more conflicts of interest on the MPSC [Michigan Public Service Commission] board. No more closed-door rate decisions. And no more guaranteed profits before a single dollar goes to fixing the grid," said Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.
