Teen Open Studio is a relaxed, creative night just for teens—perfect for hanging out, making art, and enjoying some pizza. Whether you're into painting, drawing, or want to try something new, this is a great space to explore your creativity and meet other teen artists. Bring a project you’re working on or use our supplies to create something new. Open to all media!

If you’d like to participate in a peer-led project, each month will feature a different craft led by the Art Reach TAG. October’s project will be Pumpkin Painting. A $5 fee will cover materials to participate in this project. Payment can be made in cash at the open studio or pre-pay online.

Teen Open Studio runs from 6 to 8 pm on Saturday, October 24, and takes place on the fourth Saturday of every month.

This program is a Teen Advisory Group (TAG) initiative designed to give teens space and support to explore their creativity. A suggested donation of $5 may be made in person for those attending. Assorted supplies are free for use, including acrylic & watercolor paints, markers, colored pencils, pastels, paper, and collage materials.

Recommended age: 13-19

Explore colored pencil drawing in an in-depth, skill-building course with award-winning artist and instructor Julie Tyslicky. She will teach you how to effectively use artist-quality colored pencils by exploring layering and blending, with color theory as the backbone of the techniques learned. This course does not specifically teach basic drawing techniques (other than how to shade a sphere); therefore, an understanding of basic drawing and greyscale values is advised. Students will learn to draw spheres and eggs primarily as subject matter in a hands-on and in-depth manner through assignments and in-class discussions. Students will be provided supplies for the first session and instructed on required supplies for future sessions.

This 8-week course will be held 3:30-5:30 pm, Monday, September 14-November 2, in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach, 111 E. Broadway in Mount Pleasant.

Students who have completed the Beginner Colored Pencil course are invited to join us for this four-week course to further hone their colored pencil skills with award-winning artist and instructor Julie Tyslicky. This recurring monthly course is dedicated to advanced ideas and rotating projects, as well as critique for serious students building a portfolio and looking to exhibit their work. Students MUST have completed Intro to Colored Pencils with Julie to enroll in this course.

This 4-week course will be held from 6-8 pm, Monday, October 12-November 2, in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach, 111 E. Broadway in Mount Pleasant.

Explore the tactile nature of textiles with a beginner course in weaving with instructor Annie Croft. Students will work from 8×12-inch looms, utilizing a variety of yarns to create colorful, textured tapestries. Between classes, students will be sent home with supplies to work on their tapestry for finishing at the second session. All supplies are provided. This is a great way to use up yarn and fabric scraps for an artful addition to your home!

This 2-week course will be held from 10 am-12 pm on Tuesdays, October 27 & November 3, in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach, 111 E. Broadway in Mount Pleasant.

Capture a truly handmade feel in your journaling or sketching by creating from scratch. Utilizing recycled materials, instructor Chyann Haas will guide you in creating handmade papers to be formed into a book. Your papers will have texture, character, and a soft handmade feel, perfect for creating your hand-bound book. We’ll create your book with hard covers to make them durable and useful for journaling, sketching, artwork, and more.

This 3-week course will be held from 5:30-7:30 pm on Tuesday, October 13-27, in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at 111 E. Broadway, Mount Pleasant, MI.

You don't need to be funny… you just need to jump into character!

Take your improv journey to the next level! Build on the foundations of Level I and dive into improvised scene work - the heart of improv. Through engaging exercises, we'll develop characters, highlight relationships, and craft meaningful (and hilarious) scenes together. Strengthen your ability to "Yes, And…" by actively agreeing with and building on your teammates' ideas in a supportive and playful environment. This class is perfect for honing creativity, collaboration, and adaptability. Prerequisites: Improv level 1 or instructor approval.

Coach Ariel Rak studied and performed short and long form improv with Magnet Theater (NYC) and the N.J. School of Dramatic Arts and was a member of ComedySportz before moving to Midland. Ages 18+

For drawing, learn the fundamentals of observational drawing with an introduction to materials and their functions, perspective, proportion, composition, shading and more. For painting, you may be an absolute beginner or be well versed in the acrylic medium. Cyd will provide an understanding of the principles and elements of art, color mixing, composition, and adding mediums to explore the versatility of acrylics. There will be project flexibility depending on your artistic needs with in-depth tailored instruction.

This is the second course of four in the Fundamentals of Drawing series with award-winning artist and instructor Julie Tyslicky. This course will build upon the skills learned in course 1 to further advance your technical art skills. Participants will learn how to utilize tools to sharpen their skills in drawing. You will learn more about observation with site measuring. Students will also learn technical skills in using grids, their many uses as a tool, and how it assists in portrait drawing, as well as one & two-point perspective drawing.

Fundamentals of Drawing 1 is required before taking Fundamentals of Drawing 2.

This 12-week course will be held 6-9 pm, Wednesday, September 16-December 2, in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach, 111 E. Broadway in Mount Pleasant.

Each week provides a unique creative experience for all children ages 7 - 13. We make our own unique art as we learn about artists and their techniques. Experiences include visual arts, culinary arts, movement and music, theater, and writing with a caring group of expert instructors who love to teach. Have something to say but unsure of how to put it out into the world? Join instructor Laura Swanberg and embrace your inner poet. During this 2-week workshop, students will explore beginner-level poetry writing. You’ll learn different genres of poetry and discover that it has no limits. The workshop will guide you in sourcing inspiration, and allow you to form poems in your authentic voice. Time will be dedicated to sharing with class and understanding the benefit of editing.

No writing experience? No problem! This is a terrific opportunity for writers of all levels wanting to explore and discover poetry.

This studio class is for those who want to delve deeper into the artistry and craftsmanship of stained glass. You must have taken class with Paul or have recent stained-glass training with experience cutting glass, using the tools, including a grinder, and with the terminology.

Tools and some supplies are provided. You may need to purchase additional glass, solder, and lead came for more involved projects.

After registration, you will be supplied with the instructor’s contact information. Paul will help you select an appropriate project so your project plan can be ready for the first class. (Please – no lamps, or large projects.)
