Salvation Army receives $150K donation for northern MI flood victims

The Salvation Army in northern Michigan has just received a big boost in their efforts to help people impacted by widespread flooding.

The Pulte Family Charitable Foundation awarded $150,000 dollars to the Salvation Army in Cheboygan County. The aid with help residents in Cheboygan, Emmet, and Presque Isle Counties.

Natalie MacClugage is the business manager for the Salvation Army chapter. She said many people in the area need help.

"There's so many we've spoken to who don't have insurance coverage, and they're looking at thousands of dollars in repairs. They've lost their personal belongings," she said.

$50,000 dollars of the donation will go to immediate aid. The other $100,000 will be used as matching funds for donations.

MacClugage says there are a variety of needs in the area, the money will go to help people with relocation and construction materials.

In addition, she says The Salvation Army can help with “basic necessities like mattresses, box springs, a table and chairs.”

People interested in donating can do so on The Salvation Army website, or by sending a letter. The Salvation Army in Cheboygan is located at 444 S. Main St., Cheboygan, MI 49721.

They will hold a registration event in the city of Cheboygan next Thursday at the Black River Full Gospel Church.

State and federal officials are currently surveying damage in preparation for a potential federal disaster relief application.
