The Cheboygan Lock and Dam Complex reopened on Friday, June 27 after state-wide flooding threatened the structural integrity of the dam this spring.

State and federal officials worked to divert water from the dam to prevent it from overtopping.

"Our staff — more than 150 employees across all divisions — jumped into action, working night and day to protect people and property," said Department of Natural Resources director Scott Bowen.

Some residents were ordered to evacuate their homes and others remained on standby as officials worked to prevent the dam from failing.

The dam remained closed to the public even after flood waters receded to undergo inspections and further repairs.

"Our staff has been there ever since, making sure these important waterways are available for use this summer," said Bowen. "This incident is another clear reminder of the need to care for dams across Michigan and of the need to invest in DNR-managed dams."

Now, the Department of Natural Resources says the lock complex is open for commercial and recreational boats up to 16 feet wide and 75 feet long.

Boating access sites at Garfield road and Lincoln Street are also open. The sites will be open daily for the remainder of the season.

"Thank you to everyone who helped keep Michiganders safe and returned recreational opportunities to northern Michigan," said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Residents across central and northern Michigan are still recovering from the historic floods. The governor requested federal relief funding and help from the Small Business Administration this month.
